The theatrical prop, like the proscenium arch, is a divide between the illusory and the constructed. Never a whole object, the prop is a stand in for the real, a reference, it points to the real needing only to be convincing enough. The line here is the cut between what will be seen and what faces away, revealing its falseness to the illusion makers while the divisive line is understood and given up to the agreement of the theatrical. Sliced in half, the prop as art object reveals the line between performer and viewer and permits the approach of the viewer.
